Hospitality RFID
RFID for Hospitality
Key Cards & Linen Tags
Quick answer
Hospitality RFID replaces magnetic-stripe and metal keys across hotel rooms, resort amenities and cruise cabins using ISO/IEC 14443 Type A contactless cards and IP67 wristbands compatible with the dormakaba Saflok, ASSA ABLOY VingCard / Visionline, Salto XS4, Onity Advance and Be-Tech lock fleets. ProudTek manufactures MIFARE DESFire EV3 (AES-128, NXP MF3DH series) cards for new-build and chain-scale properties, MIFARE Plus SE for Classic-to-AES migrations, and MIFARE Classic 1K for legacy Saflok RT and Onity HT estates, alongside NTAG 424 DNA cashless wristbands integrated with Tappit and Connect&GO POS platforms. Field data shows magnetic-stripe re-issue rates dropping 85-95% within 90 days, cashless F&B per-capita spend up 15-30%, and end-of-stay cash reconciliation falling from 90 minutes to 8 minutes per property. ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 cards, PCI DSS 4.0 and GDPR compliant.
- Lock-system compatible across Saflok, Onity, ASSA ABLOY Visionline, Salto, VingCard and Be-Tech — send us your lock model, we verify the chip before we quote.
- Three credential tiers: AES-128 DESFire EV3 for new-build and security-sensitive properties, Plus SE for Classic-to-AES migrations, Classic 1K for legacy Saflok RT / Onity HT estates.
- Chain-scale stock program: 72-hour dispatch on reorders, buffer inventory per property, property-specific artwork across 50–500+ keyed-alike portfolios.

- What hospitality RFID is NOT
-
- Not a substitute for the visible room number — coexists with branded artwork + property name.
- Not a substitute for the lock — pair with ASSA Abloy / Salto / Saflok / Onity firmware.
- Not a temperature sensor — pair with Murata SL900A / Sensitech logger if cold-chain F&B.
- Not standalone — full ROI requires PMS + lock + POS + laundry-service integration.
What ProudTek supplies to the hospitality industry
ProudTek is a factory-direct manufacturer of the three RFID product lines that dominate a hotel property: guest key cards, guest wristbands (pool, spa, all-inclusive) and linen / laundry tags. We do not sell locks, PMS software or reader infrastructure — we supply the credential and the tag, verified against the lock, reader or laundry system the property already operates.
Hotel key card by lock ecosystem and chip — which one do I buy?
Hotel lock brand and firmware generation drive the chip decision, not the other way around. The matrix below collapses the five most-asked questions about hotel key card specification into one view.
| Lock ecosystem | Typical installed base | Recommended chip | ProudTek SKU |
|---|---|---|---|
| dormakaba Saflok (RT, MT, Quantum, Confidant RFID) | Older MT/RT: MIFARE Classic 1K. Newer Quantum / Confidant RFID: MIFARE Plus / DESFire. | Match installed generation | DESFire EV3, Plus SE, Classic 1K |
| Onity HT / Advance / DirectKey | Legacy HT: Classic 1K. Advance / DirectKey: MIFARE Plus / DESFire. | Match installed generation | DESFire EV3, Plus SE, Classic 1K |
| ASSA ABLOY VingCard / Visionline / Mobile Access | Visionline + Signature RFID: DESFire and Mobile BLE. | MIFARE DESFire EV3 | DESFire EV3 |
| Salto XS4 / KS / JustIN | Native MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2/EV3 and BLE. | MIFARE DESFire EV3 | DESFire EV3 |
| Be-Tech, TESA and regional OEMs | Mixed — many read MIFARE Classic 1K by default. | Confirm per property | Classic 1K, Plus SE |
Where hotel key card projects actually fail
The surface problem in hospitality RFID is "cards stop working." The deeper pattern, seen across dozens of ProudTek accounts, is a handful of operational failure modes that hotels consistently underestimate.
Common hotel key card pain
- Magnetic-stripe cards demagnetise near guest phones; reception hands out replacements 3–5 times per room-night.
- Multi-brand portfolio needs a different card SKU per property — purchasing carries 4–6 separate codes and periodic stockouts.
- Last-minute rush orders hit 40–80 % premium pricing and freight costs when the front-desk stock runs dry mid-weekend.
- Counterfeit and duplicated cards sourced from grey-market resellers fail randomly in the lock fleet and blow the security story.
- Branding is inconsistent across properties — artwork files drift, PMS labels don't match, VIP cards look like staff cards.
What ProudTek flips it into
- RFID (MIFARE Classic / Plus / DESFire) has no magnetic layer to demagnetise; re-issue rate drops 85–95 % within 90 days.
- One supplier, one account, multiple chip SKUs under one purchase order and one QC pack.
- Chain stock program holds buffer inventory and dispatches refills within 72 hours of PO — no rush-freight premium.
- Every card ships from our line with traceable lot numbers and chip-side authentication tests before boxing.
- Per-property artwork library with version control; VIP, staff and guest cards drawn from one consistent template.
Guest wristbands for pool, spa and all-inclusive
Once guests leave the room, RFID moves from the key card to the wristband. The choice is less about chip and more about band material, water exposure and how long the guest wears it.
| Wristband | Best for | Water resistance | Typical chip |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC RFID wristband | Day-guest water parks, pools, events | IP67 — fully submersible | NTAG213 / MIFARE Classic 1K |
| Silicone RFID wristband | Multi-day resorts, spa programs | IP67, more comfortable long-wear | MIFARE Classic 1K / DESFire EV3 |
| All-inclusive hotel wristband | All-inclusive properties, cashless F&B | IP67 | MIFARE DESFire EV3 |
| Cashless payment wristband | Cashless resort spending, phone-tap top-up | IP67 | NTAG424 DNA or DESFire EV3 |
Linen and laundry tracking — where the ROI is easiest
Linen loss is the hospitality RFID project with the shortest payback period: towels, robes and sheets that a 200-room property loses to guest souvenir-taking, mis-sorted laundry returns and unaccounted attrition.
PPS laundry tags
200+ industrial wash cycles at 90 °C; sewn or heat-sealed into towels, sheets and robes; UHF or HF depending on reader choice.
Silicone laundry tags
150–200 wash cycles; softer feel for direct-skin garments (robes, uniforms); survive extractors and tunnel dryers.
Textile / woven laundry tags
50–100 wash cycles; best for lighter-service staff uniforms where cost-per-cycle is dominated by garment attrition anyway.
Soiled-linen portal reads
UHF overhead reader or HF tunnel read at the soiled-linen cage — inventory delta posts automatically to the PMS / housekeeping board.
Loss and attrition analytics
Linen shrinkage baseline (typically 10–15 % annually) drops below 5 % inside 6 months; each tag pays back well before end of service life.
Closed-loop with the plant
If laundry is outsourced, the same tag reads on both sides of the rental contract — disputes over piece counts end.
What a multi-property rollout actually looks like
When a chain moves onto a ProudTek stock program, the rollout follows a predictable rhythm — and knowing the rhythm prevents the schedule surprise that kills most hospitality RFID programs.
- Week 1 — Lock audit
Per property: lock model, firmware generation, current card chip. We return a chip-matched SKU list and flag firmware upgrades needed to accept DESFire EV3.
- Week 2 — Artwork + pilot order
Per-property artwork library set up under one master account. 500-card pilot per property ships inside 10 business days for front-desk validation.
- Week 3–4 — Stock forecast + buffer set
We calculate per-property monthly run rate, set safety stock, and ship the first buffer batch to the regional procurement warehouse or direct to property.
- Ongoing — 72-hour reorder SLA
Front-desk ordering portal; each reorder dispatches within 72 hours against the artwork and chip already validated.
- Quarterly — Migration review
We review which properties are ready to migrate from Classic 1K to Plus SE or DESFire EV3, and stage the chip transition so the lock fleet is not left without cards at any point.
- 2026 — Today
From buyer conversations across luxury-flagship-vingcard-visionline, all-inclusive-resort-cashless-wristband, cruise-line-mifare-ultralight, multi-site-mid-scale-saflok-confidant, conference-corporate-event-disposable and extended-stay-classic-to-desfire programmes.
Why MIFARE DESFire EV3 + AES-128 became the new-build hotel default
- Cashless F&B at all-inclusive resort + cruise — per-capita spend +15-30%; PCI DSS 4.0 compliant.
- PMS folio integration — guest charges post to room automatically via Oracle OPERA + Mews + Cloudbeds.
- Chain-scale procurement — 10-500+ properties under master account + 72-hour reorder dispatch SLA.
Compatibility, compliance and what to ask the lock vendor
The two technical conversations every hospitality RFID buyer should have before cutting a PO — one with the lock vendor, one with the card supplier.
- Confirm ISO/IEC 14443 Type A — every MIFARE family credential we supply conforms to ISO/IEC 14443-2/-3/-4, which is the only RF baseline hotel locks actually need to accept.
- Confirm the chip generation is supported by the installed lock firmware: Classic 1K, Plus SE or DESFire EV3. Ask the lock vendor for the exact chip-family allow-list their firmware recognises.
- For DESFire EV3 deployments, agree the key ceremony — who holds the AES master key, who diversifies per-property, who provides the HSM — before you ship the first production card.
- For laundry, confirm whether the property wants HF (13.56 MHz, short-range tunnel) or UHF (860–960 MHz, overhead portal) linen tags. The tag family and reader stack are tied together; mixing is a procurement trap.
- For ISO/IEC 7810 branded print, confirm the artwork is produced for ID-1 CR80 dimensions and that any chip-side personalisation runs against the same PMS card-number scheme.
- Inventory every lock model across the portfolio before specifying any card chip.
- Run a 500-card pilot per property before committing to a 50,000+ stock order.
- Write the key ceremony + chip-transition plan before the migration PO, not during it.
- Stage artwork under one master account with per-property overlays — avoids drift across 50+ hotels.
- Agree a 72-hour reorder SLA and a buffer level tied to monthly run rate, not ad-hoc emails.

FAQ
Which chip should I pick for my hotel locks?
Chip choice follows lock model and firmware. Legacy Saflok RT/MT and Onity HT run on MIFARE Classic 1K; newer Saflok Quantum / Confidant RFID and Onity Advance typically support MIFARE Plus or DESFire EV3; ASSA ABLOY Visionline and Salto XS4 are natively DESFire-generation. Send us the lock model plate, firmware version and a working card — we confirm the chip via a lab-side read before we quote.
What is the MOQ and lead time for custom-printed hotel key cards?
Custom-printed MOQ is 500 cards, with 10–15 business days production plus freight. Blank white stock cards ship from 100 pieces, typically within 1–3 business days. Volume pricing improves materially at 10,000+ cards per PO; chain accounts run on a blanket PO with 72-hour reorder dispatch.
Can you supply one account for a multi-property hotel chain?
Yes. We currently supply chains ranging from 10 to 500+ properties under a single master account. Per-property artwork, per-property card numbering schemes and consolidated monthly billing are standard. Volume pricing improves on cumulative monthly run rate across the portfolio rather than per-property POs.
How do RFID wristbands tie into cashless F&B at an all-inclusive?
The wristband carries a MIFARE DESFire EV3 or NTAG424 DNA chip bound to the guest folio in the PMS. Pool, spa and F&B POS terminals tap the wristband and post the charge to the room. Cashless uplift typically runs 15–30 % versus cash-handling properties because the friction of opening a wallet disappears; staffing at amenity gates also drops because the tap-to-verify flow replaces visual wristband checks.
Will my linen survive 200+ wash cycles with a tag sewn in?
PPS laundry tags are specified at 200+ industrial wash cycles at 90 °C and typically outlast the garment itself. Silicone tags run 150–200 cycles and are better for direct-skin wear (robes, uniforms). Textile/woven tags are 50–100 cycles and match lighter-service staff uniforms. The failure mode is almost never the chip — it is the sewing or heat-seal attachment, which we specify alongside the tag.
How do I handle the migration from MIFARE Classic 1K to DESFire EV3 without a lockout?
Stage the lock firmware upgrade first so the fleet accepts both Classic and DESFire credentials during the transition. Then issue DESFire cards to new guests while existing Classic cards remain active through their stay. Sunset Classic issuance over a 30–60 day window. We hold both chip SKUs in stock during the transition so no property is left without cards. The key ceremony (who holds the AES master key and who diversifies per property) needs to be agreed before the first DESFire card ships.
Are branded wooden or bamboo key cards reader-compatible?
Yes — our wooden and bamboo card bodies use the same MIFARE Classic / Plus / DESFire chips as the PVC equivalents and present identical RF to the lock reader. Read range is within specification (per ISO/IEC 14443) once we verify the antenna tuning under the chosen veneer. We always pilot 100 cards per lock model before ramping a wooden-card order.
What chip is used in MIFARE hotel keys?
Three NXP silicon families dominate hotel keys in 2024-2026. MIFARE Classic 1K (CRYPTO-1, 1 KB EEPROM) remains the installed base for legacy dormakaba Saflok RT / MT and Onity HT locks but is academically broken since the Garcia et al. ESORICS 2008 paper. MIFARE Plus SE is the AES-128 drop-in replacement that preserves the same reader infrastructure during migration. MIFARE DESFire EV3 (NXP MF3DH series, AES-128 plus 3DES, 2/4/8 KB user memory, up to 28 application slots) is the new-build default specified by ASSA ABLOY Visionline, Salto XS4 and dormakaba Confidant RFID. See the NXP product brief at https://www.nxp.com/products/rfid-nfc/mifare-hf/mifare-desfire/.
Is MIFARE Classic 1K secure enough for hotel keys?
No — not for new deployments. The CRYPTO-1 cipher has been cryptanalysed since 2008 (Garcia et al., ESORICS); commercially available tools clone Classic 1K cards in under 30 seconds. For an installed Saflok RT or Onity HT fleet that has not yet migrated, Classic 1K remains operationally serviceable for short-stay rooms with low theft exposure, but should be retired in favour of MIFARE Plus SE (AES-128, same reader infrastructure) or MIFARE DESFire EV3 (AES-128, AES mutual auth, multi-application). The NIST recommendation NIST SP 800-131A treats CRYPTO-1 as deprecated; PCI DSS 4.0 also penalises stored-value cards on broken ciphers. Plan a Classic-to-DESFire migration within 12-24 months.
Can you supply ASSA ABLOY VingCard or Saflok-compatible key cards directly?
Yes. ProudTek manufactures the underlying contactless credential (MIFARE Classic 1K, Plus SE, DESFire EV3) used in ASSA ABLOY Global Solutions VingCard / Visionline / Mobile Access locks and in dormakaba Saflok Quantum / Confidant RFID locks. We do not resell branded lock-vendor stock; we supply the chip on ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 (CR80, 85.60 x 53.98 x 0.76 mm) PVC, wood, bamboo or metal card bodies with your artwork. Compatibility is verified property-by-property against the lock firmware version.
