Proud Tek 2026 RFID Industry Adoption Index
N=200 buyer survey across 20 industries
Quick answer
The Proud Tek 2026 RFID Industry Adoption Index is a vendor-neutral, primary-data survey of 200 RFID and NFC buyers, integrators and operators (10 respondents per industry across 20 verticals) on adoption maturity, mandate compliance progress, KPI lift, ROI envelope, vendor selection criteria and 2027 deployment intent. Fielded May–August 2026; first data brief published 15 September 2026; full report 30 October 2026; anonymized respondent-level dataset released under CC-BY-4.0 on 28 January 2027. This page is the program's permanent home: methodology, instrument, pre-registration, status, preview chapters and final assets all live here.
- 200 respondents, 20 industries, mixed methods (online survey + 20 expert interviews). Pre-registered 2026-05-11 at the Center for Open Science.
- Publication calendar: recruitment 2026-05-18 → fieldwork close 2026-08-15 → first data brief 2026-09-15 → full report 2026-10-30 → open dataset 2027-01-28.
- Reports KPI lift, mandate progress, ROI realism, vendor criteria, 2027 intent. Pairs 1:1 with the 20 /industries/ landing pages — every vertical finding lands as a buyer recommendation.

Research questions
The five primary research questions the Index is designed to answer. Each question maps to specific survey items (Q-IDs in parentheses).
- RQ1 — Adoption maturity by industry: what share of organizations in each of 20 industries are at each adoption stage (no RFID / piloting / partial production / full production)? Maps to Q4, Q5, Q6, Q14.
- RQ2 — Mandate compliance progress: among industries with a live mandate (retail Walmart/Target/Macy's, pharma DSCSA, EU DPP/ESPR, FSMA 204, EUDR, IATA 753, MIL-STD-129R, ATA Spec 2000), what share of obligated organizations are on track vs at risk? Maps to Q12, Q13.
- RQ3 — KPI lift realism: what KPI lift do organizations actually realize post-deployment vs the lift they expected pre-deployment? Inventory accuracy, BOPIS fulfilment, shrink, labor cost, mandate fines. Maps to Q15, Q16, Q17.
- RQ4 — Vendor selection criteria: which factors do RFID buyers rank highest when choosing a hardware vendor (price, compliance documentation, lead time, customization, RFID Lab certification, sustainability)? Maps to Q19, Q20.
- RQ5 — 2027 deployment intent: what share of organizations plan to expand, hold or roll back their RFID deployment in the next 12 months, and what is the dominant driver? Maps to Q22, Q23, Q24.
Sampling frame and recruitment plan
Industry-stratified quota sample, N=10 per industry × 20 industries = 200. Recruitment is multi-channel to avoid panel-bias and self-selection-bias.
| Channel | Expected % of sample | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Sales Navigator outreach | 35% | Filter on job title + industry; direct InMail with pre-incentive. |
| Centiment B2B panel | 30% | Third-party screened B2B panel; pays incentive on completion. |
| Industry trade-association directories | 15% | RAIN Alliance, ATA, AHLA, NRF, HIMSS, AAMI, RFID Journal member directories. |
| Conference badge-scan follow-up | 10% | Attendees of NRF Big Show, HIMSS Global, RFID Journal Live!, PACK EXPO, ProMat. Opt-in only. |
| Existing Proud Tek client referrals | 10% | Capped at 10% so client base does not bias findings. Disclosed in methodology appendix. |
Pre-registered hypotheses
The hypotheses below were published 2026-05-11 — before recruitment opens — and timestamped at osf.io/{pending}. Pre-registration prevents HARKing (hypothesizing after results known).
- H1: Retail-apparel adoption rate (% organizations in full production) exceeds 65% in 2026, driven by Walmart Tier 2/3 expansion.
- H2: Pharmaceutical full-production adoption is lower than retail-apparel despite DSCSA enforcement, because 2D barcode remains the dominant carrier at dispense.
- H3: Hospitality NFC adoption among 4-star+ properties exceeds 80% but is below 30% among 2-star and limited-service properties.
- H4: EU Digital Product Passport readiness among textile / battery suppliers selling into the EU lags the announced 2027 mandate by ≥18 months on the median respondent.
- H5: Inventory accuracy lift among retail RFID full-production organizations is between 22 and 28 percentage points (from 71% baseline to 94–98% post).
Methodology summary

FAQ
When can I cite this study?
The pre-registration (research questions, hypotheses, methodology, instrument) is citable from 2026-05-11 onward — for example, a journalist or analyst can cite 'Proud Tek 2026 RFID Industry Adoption Index, pre-registered 2026-05-11' when describing methodology. Findings become citable in three waves: the first data brief on 2026-09-15 (top-line N=200 numbers), the full report on 2026-10-30 (per-industry findings), and the open dataset on 2027-01-28 (any custom cross-tab a third party derives). Preview chapters published during fieldwork are timestamped and citable but explicitly superseded by the full report.
How is the sample weighted?
Each respondent is weighted to match the 2026 RFID industry-revenue distribution from IDC Worldwide RFID Forecast (or the latest available year if IDC has not yet released the 2026 update; the substitute year is disclosed in the methodology appendix). Weights are calibrated to industry × organization-size cells; if a cell has fewer than 3 respondents, it is collapsed into the next-larger cell to avoid extreme weights. All weights are published per respondent in the open dataset so any analyst can re-weight.
Can I license the report under a commercial license instead of CC-BY-4.0?
No. The published report and the open dataset are CC-BY-4.0 only. Commercial reuse with attribution is permitted under the license. We do not offer exclusive or paid-tier access; the 90-day exclusivity window before the dataset release is a methodological control (so the first publication captures attention), not a commercial gate.
How are conflicts of interest handled?
Three controls. (1) Proud Tek pays for the study from internal marketing R&D budget; no third-party hardware vendor, integrator or client co-funds. (2) The instrument contains zero questions evaluating Proud Tek or any specific RFID vendor — every question is product- and brand-agnostic. (3) Respondents recruited through existing Proud Tek client lists are capped at 10% of the sample, flagged in the dataset, and exclusion-tested in the analysis appendix (results compared with and without that subsample). The funding statement and conflict register are published in section 8 of the methodology appendix.
How do I get notified when the report publishes?
Three options. (1) Submit your email at /research/participate/ — this also signals interest in being a respondent. (2) Follow the Proud Tek LinkedIn company page — release announcement and the social card go live on 2026-10-30 at 09:00 UTC. (3) Journalists covering the RFID / IoT / supply-chain beat can request embargoed access 72 hours before publication by emailing research@proudtek.com with publication and beat.
